Morocco v Togo: El Ahmadi hungry for success

Karim El Ahmadi is desperate for Africa Cup of Nations success and hopes Morocco can bounce back from their opening defeat at the hands of DR Congo when they take on Togo on Friday.

Herve Renard s men were among the favourites heading into the tournament, but disappointed in their Group C opener as DR Congo proved to be too strong.

They desperately need a win against Togo to keep their chances of reaching the knockout stages alive and El Ahmadi has stressed they must act as a team and adapt if they are to succeed.

I want to achieve something with Morocco. That is my goal and what the entire team wants, El Ahmadi told NOS.

I think we are among the favourites, in particular when you look at our ind…

Benfica must target Champions League knockouts – Rui Vitoria

Benfica head coach Rui Vitoria says targeting a place in the Champions League knockouts is a must for his side.

The Lisbon giants have only gone beyond the group stage once in their last seven attempts, in the 2011-12 season, when they were beaten by eventual winners Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

Vitoria wants to see a winning start to their campaign this term to give them the best possible chance of progressing, though he is wary of the attacking speed at the disposal of opening opponents Astana.

We want to start this group stage well, get three points and continue to perform the same way we did on Friday [in the 6-0 thrashing of Belenenses], he said.

We want to qualify from the group, which is something that has not happened too often in the past.<…

Hoffenheim sign Locadia from Brighton on loan

Hoffenheim have signed Jurgen Locadia from Brighton and Hove Albion on a season-long loan deal.

The former PSV forward has failed to make an impact at the Amex Stadium following his reported £16million transfer in 2016 a club-record fee at the time  scoring six goals in 43 appearances.

Locadia started Brighton s opening Premier League game at Watford and was a second-half substitute against Southampton, but he was left out of the squad for Tuesday s EFL Cup tie at Bristol Rovers.

Hoffenheim confirmed on their official website that an agreement has been reached to take the 25-year-old on loan until the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Bundesliga side have taken three points from their first two matches and had been in the market for a fresh option in at…

Mourinho did not intend to punish ´fantastic´ Pogba

Jose Mourinho insists he was not trying to punish Paul Pogba by dropping him for the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday, lauding the Frenchman s great attitude as he came off the bench.

Pogba had been withdrawn in the second half of United s 2-0 loss at Tottenham on Wednesday, with Mourinho substituting him shortly after the pair engaged in a heated discussion on the touchline.

The midfielder was then left out of United s starting XI for Huddersfield s visit, sparking suggestions that Pogba was in Mourinho s bad books.

But the coach insisted that is not the case, before going on to praise Pogba s replacement Scott McTominay.

Speaking in his post-match news conference, Mourinho said: I changed a few players and the intention was not to punish anyon…

Odegaard to Arsenal? Madrid leave midfielder out of LaLiga squad amid speculation

Martin Odegaard will not be involved for Real Madrid against Deportivo Alaves amid speculation he could be set to join Arsenal.

Odegaard excelled out on loan at Real Sociedad in the 2019-20 season but has found first-team opportunities limited under Zinedine Zidane upon his return to the Spanish capital.

The Norway international has failed to score or assist in his nine appearances this season in all competitions and, having made just five starts, seems keen to seal a move away in January.

A return to the Basque club – where he managed seven goals and nine assists in 36 appearances – appeared to be on the cards, but Arsenal have now emerged as the clear favourites to sign the midfielder on loan.

Madrid assistant coach David…
